What are the Buzău mud volcanoes?

Vulcanii Noroioși is a natural reserve of mud-volcano areas, including Pâclele Mari, Pâclele Mici and Beciu. Gas rising through clay and water brings cold mud to the surface, where it gathers into small cones and craters.
The formations are not hot-lava volcanoes: the process described by the Buzău Land UNESCO Global Geopark produces cold mud. The landscape is shaped by this steady movement of gas, water and clay, rather than by molten rock.
Pâclele Mari and Pâclele Mici are the main visitor sites and are connected by a hiking trail. You can visit the reserve by road, or use the route between the sites to make the landscape part of a longer outing.
How do you get from Buzău to Vulcanii Noroioși?

From Buzău, follow DN 10 in the direction of Brașov to Sătuc in Berca commune, then continue about 20 km to the reserve. Buzău County Council gives these directions for the road approach.
A local tourism association describes the route as continuing through Sătuc and Berca toward Scorțoasa via DJ 102F. The county council’s directions place the reserve beyond Sătuc; use the road signs and local directions as you continue toward the site.
For a separate city stop before or after the drive, the Buzău city centre guide covers getting around and local sights.
If you plan to walk between the main sites, the Buzău Land Geopark says the trail can be accessed from either end by car or bicycle.
It runs from Berca toward Scorțoasa via Policiori, and parking is available at both ends. That gives you a choice of starting at Pâclele Mari or Pâclele Mici rather than treating the trail as a one-way route without a return plan.
If you are building a wider day around the city, a one-day Buzău itinerary offers another way to plan the time.
What are the access rules and conditions?

You need to pay a visitor fee to enter Pâclele Mari and Pâclele Mici, and the Geopark says payment is in cash. Buzău County Council lists admission as 4 lei for adults, 2 lei for students and 1 leu for pupils.
The county council gives daily visiting hours as 08:00–20:00 in summer and 08:00–16:00 in winter, without dates for the seasonal change. It also says the reserve is closed on rainy days. After heavy rain, the Geopark says the sites are inaccessible because of mud, except for the thematic path from Pâclele Mari.
Pets are not allowed in the reserve. An access ramp is available at the entrance for people with disabilities. The Geopark also says restaurants, accommodation and toilets are available at both ends of the hiking trail; Pâclele Mici has a caravan park.
Before you go: Seasonal hours and weather can affect access, so check the official site before you go. Buzău County Council publishes the reserve custodian’s contact number as 0722 623 021.
How much time should you plan for the visit?

Allow about 3 hours if you plan to walk the connecting trail between Pâclele Mari and Pâclele Mici. The Buzău Land Geopark describes it as an easy hike of 6.2 km round trip, with the return along the same segment.
The route has 130 m of elevation difference and reaches a maximum altitude of 360 m. The stated 3-hour duration applies to the connecting trail, not to a visit limited to the crater sites, so plan your day according to whether you intend to hike between them.
If you are staying in Buzău, rooms at Hotel Sport B90 put the city at the centre of your regional trip planning. Pair the drive with the reserve’s trail only if you have set aside the time for the full walk.
